Resolution 2019-20 #  7
A Proclamation Denouncing and Combating the Culture of Hate

WHEREAS it is the policy of the Coast Unified School District to
maintain a learning and working environment that is free from threats
or harmful influences of any person(s) or group(s) which exhibit
and/or promote violence and disruptive behaviors.

WHEREAS the Coast Unified School District Board of Trustees is
committed to promoting an educational environment and healthy human
relationships that are physically and psychologically safe and secure.

WHEREAS the CUSD Board of Trustees believes that violent, racist
speech, transphobic or homophobic speech, and misogynistic or sexist
speech contributes directly to violence against members of our diverse
global community, especially people of color and members of the
LGBTQIA+ communities.

WHEREAS continued use of the commonly used phrase “thoughts and
prayers” is not enough to prevent the culture of hate that is
threatening to undermine the values of goodness and compassion on
which our country was founded.

WHEREAS the CUSD Board of Trustees condemns the use of the phrase
“send them back” as it negatively affects people of color and all
people who have come to our country for a better life.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Coast Unified School District Board
of Trustees is committed to working with our community to combat the
culture of hate with unequivocal language and concrete actions; to
foster a community of understanding, especially within ours which is
rich with different cultures, religious beliefs, and sexual
orientations; to incorporating the philosophy of the Cambria Peace
Leader Promise throughout our entire district, as appropriate; and to
explore ways to enhance our curriculum to assist our students and
community in identifying risks and building common ground together.

PASSED AND ADOPTED this 12th day of September 2019.
