SLMS Library News:

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

The Santa Lucia gym was a flurry of activity on Wednesday when six teams dressed from head to toe in their team colors competed to win Battle of the Books 2013. After a full morning of competition where students were asked over 150 questions on the 12 selected book titles, two winning teams emerged—the Yellow Team and the Green Team.  They will compete on Friday in a lightning round at an assembly before the school.  However, points do not tell the whole story.  I believe that everyone who participated won.  Students read award-winning novels that they might otherwise never have picked up, worked side by side and got to know students they might not have reached out to before, and the school rallied together  to celebrate reading!
This awesome event was made possible through a generous grant from the Cambria Education Foundation and with the help of a team of parent volunteers including Jenn Ehlers, Bridget Smith, Heather Markham, Tracy McConnell, Wylda Marthaler, Cori and Andy Zinn, and Patti Schimberg. Events like these are successful because the entire staff supports them.  My thanks to our faculty and John Calandro who always said yes when I needed help and to Colleen Poynter for championing reading inside and outside the classroom.

BOOK EXCHANGE
Every student should leave school with a list of books to read over the summer.  Even better—leave school with a book in their hands to read! Join me in fulfilling this goal. If you have books lying around the house that could bring enjoyment to another student bring them by the library.  For each book your student brings in they will receive credit to be used to take home a book brought in by another student!
I will collect the books during the next month and will track your student’s donation.  Students will be invited to shop during the last week of May—just in time to take home a new title for the summer!
