Coast Union High School rests in pasture land fringed with tall trees, about three miles from the Pacific Ocean near the village of Cambria. It serves a student population of the coastal communities of Cayucos, Cambria, San Simeon, and surrounding areas and has an enrollment of approximately 250 students. CUHS is a California Distinguished School, U.S. News and World Report Silver Medalist, and listed as one of Newsweek’s Best American High Schools. CUHS is one of the first public high schools in California to distribute iPads to students on a 1:1 ratio. Class meet in Block Schedule with students attending 8 classes, four classes meeting on an alternating A/B schedule for 88 minute periods. CUHS has a wide range of extra-curricular clubs and sports teams in addition to its extensive list of college preparatory academic courses.
Students, staff, parents, volunteers and community members, all make up the tight knit family that is Coast Union High School and as such when we lose a family member or one of ours is hurting we feel the sorrow intensely. This week we lost our generous, caring and thoughtful student and friend; Terry “TJ” Miller. TJ was surrounded by the love of his family when he passed away Monday, November 18th. We will always remember TJ’s sweet smile and infectious enthusiasm. He enjoyed school, participating in FFA, cross country and hanging out with his friends. As a result of the community’s generosity, TJ was able to fulfill most of his bucket list and traveled to many parts of the world this past summer. He enjoyed seeing other beautiful parts of the world. TJ will be remembered by Coast Union with a broken yet full heart.
Our sorrow is compounded by the fact that our own P.E. , Science teacher, fabulous volleyball coach and friend Pam Kenyon was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. She has undergone surgery at Twin Cities Hospital and is currently being admitted to UCLA Medical center 11/19 where she will begin chemo and radiation therapy as soon as she is strong enough. Please help Pam in her healing by dropping off cards and gifts at the CUHS office. You can contribute to the Pam Kenyon fund at Heritage Oaks Bank, buy a PK “fight like a girl” wristband or participate in one of the upcoming fundraisers. Her presence on campus is profoundly missed.
Upcoming school holidays during the first semester of 2013-2014 are Thanksgiving Week – Monday, November 25th-29th, and Winter Break – Monday, December 23rd- Friday, January 3rd. Semester 1 Finals are Tuesday, December 17th- Friday, December 20th. The last day of the first semester is Friday, December 20th.
I look forward to working with parents, students and staff during another successful school year. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call.
