 Message from the principal

Safety Is a Priority at Coast Union High School!

Greetings, Coast Union Families:

Recently, SLO County Sheriff’s Department’s drug-sniffing dogs trained in the detection of marijuana and other illegal substances roamed the campus of Coast Union High School.  It is the administration’s intention to use the canine unit periodically, per the SLO County Sheriff’s recommendation.  During the sweeps, the dogs were brought through the banks of lockers, bathrooms, common areas, and parking lot, while students remained in their classrooms.

Please understand that the goal of this initiative is not to “catch kids,” but rather to send a message that we will not accept the presence of drugs at Coast Unified School District schools.  Our ultimate intent is to maintain the integrity of the educational process and to keep students safe.  The disruptions and the dangers caused by drugs being present in our school are unacceptable.

Coast Union High School’s current drug policy prohibits the use, sale, distribution or possession of controlled drugs, controlled substances, drug paraphernalia or alcohol, on or off school property or during any school-sponsored event.  If marijuana or other drugs are found, the student(s) who are found in possession of it will be brought to an administrative office and subjected to further questioning and search.  Penalties will include suspension and the possibility of expulsion from school.  Other action may include parent involvement, drug counseling, and medical referral and law enforcement referral.

Again, our paramount concern is for the safety of our students.  Thank you for your understanding.

Jonathan M. Sison, Ed.D.
