 Message from the principal

Greetings, Coast Union High School Students and Families

I am excited to welcome you to another year of learning and growing at Coast Union High School.  As the Principal and parent of Coast Unified students at all three schools, I share your high expectations of the District.  Collaborating with staff, I am committed to continuing the legacy of success established at Coast Union, a high-performing, California Distinguished School, U.S. News and World Report Silver Medalist, and one of America’s Best High Schools.  As the chief instructional leader of the school, I am the ultimate point of accountability for our students’ academic achievement. Specifically, I will continue to lead our teachers in focusing on the following goals:

  • 100% graduation of young adults who are college and career ready
  • Data-driven instruction in all subject areas
  • Implementation of the California State Standards (formerly known as the Common Core State Standards)
  • Meeting the needs of English learners and students with disabilities
  • Leveraging technology to personalize and maximize the learning experience

During the summer months, our Maintenance and Operations crew, led by Lee Wight, have been diligently preparing our campus for the new school year.  As usual, our school secretary Carrol Adams has taken virtually no time off, to ensure that the opening days of school run smoothly.  Our counselor Cheryl Seay has worked hard to ensure that all of our students are programmed in the appropriate classes.  Several of our teachers have participated in professional growth opportunities, with the goal of improving their instructional practices.  I am grateful for everyone’s efforts.

Coast Union students are expected to attend school daily and be punctual, and be prepared to learn.  In the spirit of reciprocal accountability, our teachers and staff will support their learning by teaching and reinforcing classroom and school expectations, as described in the Student Handbook.  iPads will be distributed during the first week of school and will include daily planners/calendars to help student organize their activities and weekly assignments.

I anticipate a most successful school year as the team and I support the academic, social, and emotional growth of your child here at Coast Union High School.  I look forward to partnering with you and your children.

Best,

Jonathan M. Sison, Ed.D.
