Superintendent’s Message

On behalf of the Board of Education and the wonderful staff of the Coast Unified School District, I welcome you. Our district has a tradition of focusing on academic excellence, along with a strong commitment to preparing all students to be career-prepared and college-ready for the 21st century. We are committed to preparing our students for their future by providing an integration of technology in our educational programs, meaningful experiences in arts education, and ongoing opportunities to participate in athletics.

Our parents and community members are critical partners in the education of our students. We value the trust that parents have placed in our staff, and we accept the responsibility of ensuring that all students develop the 21st century skills necessary for success in a competitive global society. Our number one priority is the success of every student.

We are very proud of the gains our schools have made in student performance, but recognize that success requires continuous improvement. By having relatively low class sizes across classrooms in Coast Unified School District, our teachers are especially attentive to student learning of the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.

I look forward to meeting and working with you on behalf of our students. Please feel free to contact me with questions and concerns at vschumacher@coastusd.org

WestEd Study Identifies Coast Unified as One of Six High-Performing California School Districts

American Institutes for Research (AIR), as a partner in the California Comprehensive Center at WestEd, has identified 6 high-performing districts in California to learn from their success and to share their practices with others. The study included only unified school districts, which enroll more than 70 percent of California‘s public school students. After defining high performance and identifying 30 California unified districts that met the high-performing criteria, the selected six include: Carmel, Coast, Glendale, Redondo Beach, San Marcos, and Temecula Valley Unified. In each of these six districts, interviews were conducted with a leader from the district office and three principals from a randomly selected elementary school, middle grades school, and high school to inquire as to the strategies perceived as most contributing to their success.
