One of the most important activities for kids to participate in over the summer is reading. Summer reading is a big step on the path to turning your child into a life-long reader. Of course, reading will also help your child maintain the literacy skills they have worked so hard to gain this school year. There are a number of studies that prove children who read during the summer, do better when school begins again in the fall.
Of course, as summer vacation begins, most kids look forward to long days outdoors playing with friends, bike riding, swimming and enjoying their break from school. Indoor activities like video games, television and the internet are often choices kids make before picking up a book to read.
I want to encourage each and every parent to take an active role this summer to motivate your child to read a little bit each day. It would be even more amazing if everyone in your family could spend at least 15 minutes each day reading together. If you do, you will change the way your child looks at reading for the rest of their life.
Below is a link to a summer reading list of books recommended by many of our Cambria Grammar school teachers. The list is arranged by AR dot color, so kids can find teacher recommended books at their reading level. The public library is an amazing place to find many of the books on the list. If the books aren’t here in our Cambria library, they can always be ordered from another branch library usually within a few days. Just ask the librarian for help.
Also included are links to a few of our favorite summer reading sites sponsored by Scholastic and Teacher’s First. Be sure to visit the author links as well, where kids can spend time on web sites created about their favorite books from authors such as Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling and Lemony Snicket. There are plenty of games and written activities on these sites to keep your kids excited about reading all summer long. Thank you for making reading a summer priority for your children. Your commitment to their education is invaluable. We look forward to seeing you in the fall.
